I can talk only from .NET provider perspective, but the reason is,
that the implementation is native. So wherever .NET runs, the provider
runs. That means i.e. on mobile devices with CF or some embedded
"board" with Mono embedded. And you can also easily transfer app i.e.
from Windows to Linux without worrying about libraries.
