And how many "older versions" would you support in GBAK? What if I migrate
from IB 4.0?

Currently (and it was always true), you should use older GBAK to backup the
newer database (in order to restore it on older server). This works for all
IB/FB versions, but it denies any not compatible changes in system tables.
