That would require a native Firebird library, akin to the native MySQL
library shipped with Carob. You'd need to find a volunteer or sponsor
it. IMNSHO it would be a great boost to Firebird, but then again my
opinion counts for squat since I'm not able to volunteer.
I'm going to try to find out if they have a test-suite, so we can at
least find out if Firebird or any of its drivers have any problems with
Sequoia or Carob.

Fixed already. And much better and more mature (IMHO) than my proposal.
See http://sequoia.continuent.org/HomePage
and http://carob.continuent.org/HomePage/ (for C/C++)
Now, what do you think? Can someone of you make this work between
Firebird and a Win32/Linux (ie. fbclient.dll/so) client? (A Java/Perl
client is straightforward).
