This is how SQL Server and a few other databases handle it...by a
separate connection.

It's much better to offer a new (or extended) API than to suggest

How about always opting for a SQL solution. Firebird already has way
too many feature that can only be used by API's. Those of us who only
use ODBC, OLEDB, etc..., really miss out on a lot of nice features
because of this.
