Yes, it would be great if that we an configuration option. Probably in a
lot of cases, the data stream isn't confidential enough to be worth
encrypting, but significant time could be saved if it were compressed.

I agree, while Zebedee is good, it would be considerably better to
integrate this into the wire protocol. Another reason is that using
Zebedee, you not only have to download, install, and configure it
(which, granted, is not that difficult), but, more importantly, you also
have to reconfigure your applications to use a different connection
string. If you want to access multiple hosts using Zebedee, you have to
setup one Zebedee port redirection per host. It's rather counter
intuitive to have to connect to the local host on a predefined port in
order to access a remote host.

So, as you say, I agree that this is something that would be best
integrated into FireBird. Sure, Zebedee is a nice solution for now, so
this certainly isn't top priority, but it would still be a very nice
feature which most people would appreciate.
