JW,
run.
Unfortunately, working on the optimizer is a 'run' function. Thus far the
project has been focused on learning the intrecacies of the engine design
(crawling and walking).
A better optimizer is certainly a goal of the Firebird project -- but when
that will be tackled?
I don't think anyone can say at the moment.
From a project perspective, the task to be performed immediately after the
v1.0 release will be to port the v1.0 C code base to the v2.0 C++ based code
base which was started some months ago. As part of this migration, an
extensive code cleanup will be undertaken -- you can't believe the ancient
stuff/ports that litter the code. We need to start from a 'clean' base in
order to be able to truly move forward.

There is nothing wrong with Interbase,
that can't be fixed with Firebird.
